  • Storm Damage Tree Estimates and Removal

"Storms in the Seattle area and Pacific Northwest" often inflict high winds, snow, and ice on trees. There have been many major wind storms that have wreaked havoc in the area in the last decade, as well as storms with major snow and ice accumulation. Seattle Arbor Barber Tree Service provides 24-hour tree removal emergency services for hazardous and storm-damaged trees that have failed and resulted in damage to your home or property. Arbor Barber Tree Service can also help with storm damage tree prevention through preventative pruning and selective tree removal. Even if your trees do not exhibit any symptoms after a storm, it is important to have an Arbor Barber Certified Arborist and Tree Risk Assessor inspect them for conditions that could be problematic later.

  • Hazard Tree Analysis/ Risk Assessment

All trees have the potential to become hazardous at some stage in their life span, and will always fall down at some point. As trees age, they become susceptable to decay and other defects. Anticipating problems, identifying them, and preventing damage before it occurs are important reasons to perform hazard tree analysis.

At Arbor Barber Tree Service, our certified arborists and tree risk assessors will examine the overall health, surrounding soil, structural integrity and defects of your trees and prescribe the necessary treatments to help prevent tree failure, property damage, and personal injury. We also  provide detailed Hazard Tree Analysis reports, as well as reports for neighbor disputes or permit issues, or just informal assessments as part of our consultation.

If a tree risk assessment indicates a high risk of failure, mitigations can be taken to reduce the risk such as remedial tree pruning, pruning to reduce end weight, or installing synthetic or metal cables or rods for bracing. If these treatments can not significantly reduce the risk of failure, then tree removal or restricting the access to the tree must be considered to prevent personal injury or property damage.

  • Tree Removals

Although many trees can be saved through proper pruning and maintenance, there are circumstances when tree removal is necessary. Arbor Barber certified arborists and tree risk assessors can help you decide if and when your tree should be removed. Tree removals are performed to remove dead or dying trees, or when they are considered a hazard that can not be mitigated through other means. Sometimes trees are removed because of crowding, lack of space, damage to adjacent structures, or because they are located in an area where new construction requires removal.

Tree removals are generally the most hazardous aspect of arboriculture. Arbor Barber Tree Service certified arborists often must remove trees with major decay and weakened structural integrity that are in close proximity to buildings, utility lines, or complex landscape features with little access. They are highly skilled and trained in the use of complex rigging techniques, mechanical lowering devices, and the use of cranes for lowering wood safely.

  • Hazardous Tree Removal

The Certified Arborists and Certified Tree Risk Assessors at Arbor Barber Tree Service can provide you with arborist reports for a variety of situations and needs.

Hazard Tree Analysis reports are needed in many situations for tree removal, such as working near an environmentally critical area or removing over the maximum number of allowed trees according to city rules or statutes. They are also a useful tool for identifying hazard trees on an adjacent property, and notifying the adjacent property owner of the hazard. This in itself cannot force anyone to remove a hazard tree on their property, but it can identify liability if the tree cause damages to your property at a later date.

Tree Identification reports and Tree Protection reports are needed before the commencement of new construction or subdivided properties into lots or parcels. All significant trees (trees over 6 inches) must be measured, identified, and inspected for condition. Arbor Barber Tree Service can help you understand the local rules and regulations for preserving trees during construction, and prepare a custom tree preservation plan for your site. Please contact us if you are interested in more information about Arborist Reports or are interested in a free estimate.

  • Tree Pruning

Did you know that pruning and maintaining your trees is actually more cost effective than neglecting them? Studies published in the Journal of Arboriculture have shown that it is cheaper to regularly prune trees rather than ignoring them and cleaning up any resulting damage! That is why many cities have tree care crews, or they contract with tree companies to regularly prune and care for trees.

Arbor Barber Tree Service, certified arborists, provide expert pruning that will improve the structure, health and appearance of trees, increasing their life span and preventing damage through the removal of undesirable branches whether they are dead, weakened, diseased or insect-infested.

There are many different techniques of pruning depending upon the tree, hedge or shrub species, maturity, and condition as well as seasonal limitations and specific objectives. All of these techniques however must adhere to ANSI A300 standards (American National Standards Institute Standards for Tree Pruning, hedge). This standard requires that the recommended use of certain tools, cutting techniques, and pruning methods be followed.

ANSI A300 Part 1 Pruning sets some guidelines for basic pruning practices that arborist should follow. If an arborist is adhering to the ANSI A300 Part 1 Pruning standard they:

  •     will not leave branch stubs,
  •     will make few or no heading cuts,
  •     will not cut off the branch collar (not make a flush cut),
  •     will not top or lion’s tail trees,
  •     will not remove more than 25% of the foliage of a single branch,
  •     will not remove more than 25% of the total tree foliage in a single year,
  •     will not damage other parts of the tree during pruning,
  •     will not use wound paint.

Arbor Barber certified arborists will give you a free consultation for the pruning that your trees, shrubs, or hedge requires for the space that they are located in. We can prune any age, size, species, and shape of tree, shrub, or hedge. Below are some examples of pruning that we can perform for you.

  • Fine Pruning

Arbor Barber Tree Service, certified arborists, will take the time to correctly prune all your ornamental trees, shrubs and hedges with beautiful results.

  • Restorative Pruning

Have you ever seen a tree  that has been hedge trimmed for years?  Each cut that is made tree mid-stem results in either branch death or decay, or the growth of multiple suckers or water sprouts.  When this happens year after year, the result is a very thick canopy with a large amount of dead wood that is much more susceptible to disease and has a shortened life span.  Proper tree pruning cuts made between 1/8" and 1/4" away from the tree branch bark collar (the thickened area at the base of a branch) help promote the formation of woundwood.

Arbor Barber Tree Service, certified arborists, can help restore trees like this back to their natural growth habits and increase the health and lifespan by removing the dead wood and decaying stubs and selectively removing branches.  It is also important not to remove too much of the canopy at any one time.  A rule of thumb is not to exceed 25%, but this factor can change in regard to species, climate, age, and time of year.  We will let you know how many times the stressed tree must be pruned in successive seasons, and remove the right amount of foliage.

Wind, snow, ice, or mechanical damage can result in a tree with a dramatically altered shape and structure.  We can inspect these trees and assess the possibility of restoration.  If hazards can be mitigated and the tree can be pruned to preserve structural integrity and health, removal might not be necessary.

  • Canopy Cleaning, Thinning, Raising, or Reduction

There are many reasons to prune a mature tree.  Proper Tree pruning promotes good branch structure, improves health through the removal of dead, diseased, stubbed, and dying branches, and reduces potential hazards.  Arbor Barber Tree Service certified arborists will assess your tree's age, condition, structure, and location and will prepare a pruning plan to meet your objectives.  The following are standard definitions of pruning that you might hear our arborists referring to:

Crown Clean: Selective Tree Pruning to remove one or more of the following parts: dead, diseased, and/or broken branches.  Many short lived, brittle tree species in the Pacific Northwest such as Cottonwoods, Bigleaf Maples, and Alders receive a crown clean to reduce falling hazards near residential yards or play areas, schools, or public areas.

Crown Thin: Selective Tree Pruning to reduce density of live branches. Thinning should be performed on tree's whose canopy is too dense and prevents sunlight from penetrating the canopy, or has a high wind resistance during potentially hazardous windstorms.

Crown Raise: Selective Tree Pruning to provide vertical clearance for practical issues such as sidewalk clearance, light entry, visibility, or to reduce crowding.

Crown Reduction: Selective Tree Pruning to decrease height and/or spread (consideration must be given to the ability of a species to tolerate reduction pruning). Sometimes tree crowns or branches must be reduced to improve form and strengthen structural stability, or to provide clearance from other vegetation or structures in the area. When performed properly, heading cuts are made on the parent branch or stem next to a smaller branch that is at least 1/3 the size of the parent branch.

  • Deadwooding Trees

Deadwooding trees is another term for a crown clean.

  • View Pruning Trees, Hedges and Shrubs

The Puget Sound has magnificent views of lakes, mountains, ocean, and city skylines. Trees, shrubs andhedges can often be pruned the right way to enhance these views without resorting to damaging practices such as toppingtrees, shrubs and hedges.  Some methods of proper view pruning entail crown raising, selective crown thinning, and pocket thinning.

  • Shaping

Generally another term for crown reduction, shaping entails reducing tall tree forms for preventative maintenance from winter storms, spacing issues, or esthetics.  Shaping can be performed correctly by the proper placement of pruning cuts.

  • Windsail Reduction

Over the years, growing trees become more wind resistant because of larger canopies and become heavier, so they are prone to increased mechanical stresses and structural failure.  Tree Canopy thinning can reduce the amount of wind resistance in a large tree so the main stem will bend less in high winds, reducing the chance of stem or root failure.

Typically in the Pacific Northwest, large conifer trees can benefit the most from windsail reduction because of their large, often thick canopies.  Windsail reduction is a very common term in the Puget Sound area because of this, and is often actually performed in the wrong way.  Over thinning and  lion-tailing (removing all foliage on a branch except at the end)  can over stress a tree by removing too much canopy, expose the inner portion of the branch to sun scald, weaken individual branches, and promote the formation of water sprouts or suckers that will thicken the canopy in subsequent years.  Thinning and windsailing trees must be done the correct way to avoid these problems.  Trees pruned according to ANSI Standards A300 Part 1 Pruning standards cannot be lion’s tailed because not more than 25% of foliage can be removed in a single year and 50% of the foliage should remain evenly distributed in the lower 66% of the canopy.

  • Hedge Trimming

Hedges in the Pacific NW are usually comprised of a very fast growing tree, hedges or shrubs that must be regularly maintained and trimmed.  Each hedge has its own unique structural and species specific characteristics and obstacles to pruning.  It is important to know how different species react to trimming to properly trim and maintain a healthy hedge for a long life.  Arbor Barber Tree Service can also advise you on the location and species of new hedges.

  • House Clearance

There are many reasons to provide adequate spacing of tree, hedge and shrub foliage from buildings and structutures.  Tree, hedge or shrub branches can block sunlight that leads to moss formation on roofing, scrape or break off onto walls or roofs during storms.  Falling leaves can clog gutters. Arbor Barber Tree Service can separate the vegetation from your house or buildings using proper cuts, and leave your trees, hedges and shrubs aesthetically pleasing and your house undamaged.

  • Cabling and Bracing

There are many reasons to provide adequate spacing of tree, hedge and shrub foliage from buildings and structutures.  Tree, hedge or shrub branches can block sunlight that leads to moss formation on roofing, scrape or break off onto walls or roofs during storms.  Falling leaves can clog gutters.  Arbor Barber Tree Service can separate the vegetation from your house or buildings using proper cuts, and leave your trees, hedges and shrubs aesthetically pleasing and your house undamaged.

At Arbor Barber Tree Service our goal in all of our tree service operations is to perform the job safely, efficiently, and provide thorough clean up with minimal impact to the surrounding vegetation and area.

  • Stump Grinding

After removal of a tree, hedge or shrub, you might want the stump removed to replant, reduce the likelihood of decay or insects near your house, remove the possibilty for stump regeneration and sucker growth, or for aesthetics. The most effective and efficient means of doing this is with a stump grinder. Stump grinders are mobile, self propelled machines with a high speed rotating wheel that will grind away your stump to just below grade, or all the way through the tree's roots. The resulting wood grindings can be used for mulch or compost, or covered with topsoil for re-planting or re-seeding. Our stump grinder will fit through any gate 36" wide or more, but we can temporarily dismantle gates or fences for access as well.

Other methods of stump removal include ripping out the entire stump with an excavator, or using chemicals that will kill the remaining roots or accelerate decomposition. Excavators can be costly with access issues, and chemicals can be dangerous and slow acting. Some people will rent stump grinders, but they soon find out that these machines are difficult to operate, dangerous, and costly.

  • Wood Chipping

Arbor Barber Tree Services' large wood chippers are capable of reducing a 14" log or a large pile of brush into a chip pile in seconds. Typically, the chip debris is blown into the back of a chip truck and the load of chips is taken to a recyler to be sold as mulch or wood chips. Usually the wood chipper is used for clean up during our tree or shrub removal or pruning services, but we can also use it to get rid of brush piles or branch piles on your property.

Arbor Barber Tree Service also gives free wood chips away if the location is close to our area of work. Typically we dump an entire load of 6-10 yards of chips when we are giving them away. We keep our chipper blades sharp so the resultant chips are small and useful for mulch, landcaping bark, or dog runs and muddy areas.

  • Landscape Services

The proper location for trees, hedges and shrubs can make all the difference in their health, appearance, and value of your property. Our certified arborists can help determine and plant the right trees, hedges and shrubs for your property in terms of spacing, size, appearance, and species tolerance to your local environment. Planting the wrong tree, hedge or shrub in the wrong location could lead to future problems as a result of limited growing space, insects, diseases, or poor growth.

Arbor Barber Tree Service has a Landscape Re-Seller's permit and can buy, transport, and plant your trees, hedges, and shrubs. We also can help you determine if it is possible to transplant existing trees, hedges and shrubs considering factors such as size, species, and seasonal timing. We can transplant smaller trees, hedges, and shrubs ourselves, or recommend large tree transplanting experts for large trees.

Arbor Barber Tree Service, certified arborists, provide many other Tree Services at an affordable rate.
